The Inventory of Silence - Out 12th July
A quiet moment in a busy world.
Take a Seat is something simple I’m choosing to do in public spaces around Wakefield.
No project. No programme. No organisation behind it.
Just a human offering a moment of calm.
I sit somewhere public — a park, a shopping centre, a quiet corner — with a small A‑frame sign beside me that reads:
Take a seat
Share a moment
Silence is welcome
No cameras
That’s all it is.
I don’t bring furniture or equipment.
I sit wherever seating already exists — a bench, a public seat, or any quiet spot where people naturally pause.
Nothing is expected of you.
If you want to talk, you can.
If you want silence, we sit in silence.
If you want to leave after ten seconds, that’s completely fine.
I won’t ask you questions.
I won’t guide the moment.
I won’t try to fix anything.
I won’t take notes, record, or collect anything.
It’s simply a space where you can breathe, pause, or share a moment without pressure.
People carry more than they show.
Most of us move through the day without a single moment where nothing is demanded of us.
Take a Seat exists to offer you:
a pause
a breath
a moment of stillness
a place to sit without needing a reason
a human presence that doesn’t want anything from you
It’s not therapy.
It’s not a service.
It’s not a campaign.
It’s just a quiet moment you can choose to step into.
I’ll be doing Take a Seat in different places around Wakefield — parks, public spaces, and (with permission) indoor locations like The Ridings or Trinity Walk.
Whenever I’m out, I’ll share:
one simple photo of the location (never of people)
the what3words address
the time I’ll be there
Not to promote anything — just so you know where to find it if you need a quiet moment.
It isn’t a charity
It isn’t a business
It isn’t a performance
It isn’t content
It isn’t a conversation you owe me
It isn’t a place to unload trauma
It isn’t a space where you’re expected to talk
It’s simply a seat, a sign, and a moment.
Take a Seat is free.
I don’t charge, collect donations, or ask for anything.
If needed, I’ll use proceeds from my writing to cover small costs like travel.
You never pay to sit down.
Because sometimes the smallest things make the biggest difference.
A quiet moment.
A shared silence.
A stranger who isn’t asking anything of you.
Maybe you’ll sit.
Maybe you won’t.
Either way, the seat will be there.
